(AP) ? The Wall Street analysts who know Facebook best are giving the company's stock a mixed review. Think: like, not love.

A flood of analyst reports from 33 banks gave Facebook's stock a mix of "Neutral" and "Buy" ratings on Wednesday. And there was at least one review that equated to a "Sell" rating.

It marked the end of the 40-day quiet period following Facebook's initial public offering. Analysts at banks that led the IPO were finally allowed to give public opinions on the stock, offering the first glimpse of what the IPO's underwriters really think about Facebook.

Facebook's much-ballyhooed IPO landed with a thud on May 18, with the stock closing just 23 cents above its $38 IPO price. It hasn't fared much better since. On Wednesday, it fell 87 cents, or 2.6 percent, to close at $32.23.

Morgan Stanley, the lead bank in the IPO, gave a $38 target price for Facebook's stock over the next 12 months. That's the same as the IPO price Facebook has failed to match since its first day of trading. The analyst, Scott Devitt, said Facebook has long-term opportunities in mobile advertising despite recent concerns.

"The mobile ad market remains in its infancy ? while we believe Facebook will lead the market in mobile ad targeting, agency and brand transitions to mobile may take longer than expected," Devitt wrote.

Facebook derives the bulk of its revenue from advertising on its website, and while it has been testing mobile ad products, it warned before its IPO that its mobile users are growing at a faster rate than the revenue that it's making from them. The disclosure spooked some investors ahead of the company's initial public offering last month, and likely contributed to the stock's lukewarm reception.

William Blair's Ralph Schackart also gave the stock an "Outperform" rating, and said Facebook is "becoming a daily utility," making it difficult for people to switch to a different platform.

"While virtual, the social interaction that users engage in via updates, status changes, likes, shares, and playlists, among others, builds long-term relationships and audiences," Schackart wrote.

Mark S. Mahaney of Citi Investment Research also called Facebook an Internet utility, comparing it with the likes of Amazon.com Inc. and Google Inc. Facebook, he noted, will soon reach 1 billion monthly users and 600 million daily average users.

"By any comparison, these are startlingly impressive metrics," wrote Mahaney in a note to investors. "Facebook could, in fact, become the largest (Internet) platform one day in terms of revenue and profits, given the size and engagement of its user base and its high-margin business model."

Nonetheless, Mahaney put a "Neutral" rating on Facebook's stock, calling the company's dual-class stock structure one of the biggest investment risks. Facebook, like several other technology and media companies, has two classes of shares in order to keep voting control in the hands of its executives and early employees. CEO Mark Zuckerberg controls the company through more than half of its voting stock.

Credit Suisse found "a lot to 'like'" with Facebook, but gave its stock a "Neutral" rating and a target price of $34. Analyst Spencer Wang said that while Facebook is in a good position to capitalize on the growth of social media, its stock price already reflects a "fair amount" of this growth, limiting his enthusiasm.

Goldman Sachs, which owns a small stake in Facebook and was one of the leading underwriters of its IPO, gave the social network a "Buy" rating. Analyst Heather Bellini said that the company is poised to dominate the next phase of the Internet's evolution, "and as such will maintain industry high growth rates throughout next decade."

A rare "Underperform" rating came from Daniel Salmon at BMO Capital Markets. He gave the stock a $25 target price and said that his research shows "mixed" opinions on the effectiveness of advertising on Facebook.

Your Company Needs A CCO. Now. | Conspire: A Mindjet Publication

We are all told that team work is a critical key to team success. For those fortunate enough to witness successful team work first hand, we can certainly attest that if you can pull it off you will have some truly extraordinary results. However, successful collaboration is not only a top priority for organizations, but also it?s becoming more complicated. So how does a company help foster an environment where productive team work is the norm?

With all the recent advancements in mobile technology having large, geographically dispersed teams are quickly becoming the norm. Despite all the advantages of these teams, there are some growing concerned that need to be addressed. With more and more employees telecommuting, it?s becoming extremely difficult to build team trust. In an attempt to solve this issue, about two years ago the Harvard Business Review came up with an answer: the Chief Collaboration Officer.

According to a recent Fast Company article, by implementing a Chief Collaboration Officer ?the most critical of business strategies [will now] have a dedicated individual toiling to make collaboration part of the daily doings of the company.? Interestingly enough, despite the growing need for someone to fill this role ? whether it?s by establishing a new role or adding it to an existing role ? ?there?s only one CCO in the US.?

Todd Etter, one of the founders of the multimedia financial-services company, the Motley Fool, has held the title of Chief Collaboration Office since 2010. Given that according to a Fast Company article last May, that this is the only company to have such a role, it?s safe to say that the Motley Fool is no ordinary company. They have made it a point to stick with a core philosophy of ?enhancing productivity through unconventional practices.? We?ve all been in a situation where you are working on a team project but the easiest route is to just do it yourself. However, Tom Gardner, Motley Fools? cofounder and CEO believes, ?it?s often not the best idea.? That?s where the idea of a Chief Collaboration Officer comes in.

Working Alongside vs. Collaborating

Todd Etter says there?s ?a big difference between working alongside other staff members and actually collaborating.? In one you are only giving the pretense of collaborating and in the other, you are successfully feeding off one another. In a recent Foolympics, Etter created a puzzle based off guest speaker Michael Lewis ? author of Moneyball and The Blind Side. So you?d think in an event like this, Lewis? team would be the slam dunk. However, Lewis? team ended up coming in dead last. ?Etter says it was likely because the team hadn?t worked together before and weren?t quick to provide feedback and challenging positions.?

Balance is Important

Another important skill that helps foster productive collaboration is brainstorming. ?Brainstorming is a two-way street,? says Etter. Learning how to both create and listen is an important skill to create successful collaboration. Etter believes that ??Brainstorming is more than just throwing it all out there. Otherwise you have 30 ideas and picking one may hurt you,? says Etter. Instead try to figure out how to riff off two or three. ?That?s fewer ideas but more conversation and thought about what is suggested,? he says.?

Too Much Planning ? More Building

Etter has found that ?teams often spend too much time planning and not enough time building.? Instead of spending time developing the ?perfect strategic plan?, sometimes the best way to get the job done is by going out there and just trying things. ?Kindergartners are the most successful, Etter asserts, because they don?t plan they just start on the structure?Conversely, business school students fare worse because they busy themselves drawing up strategies and run out of time before the first strand is place.?

Whether it?s establishing the Chief Collaboration Officer as a standalone role, or adding those responsibilities into an existing role, it?s something that most of today?s firms should seriously contemplate. Teams are only going to become more dispersed, so learning to effectively and productively collaborate is a skill that isn?t going away any time soon.

ITC: Google vs Apple preliminary win reviewed, iPhone and iPad ...

The Apple vs Android legal war is so complex that unless you follow it closely, you?re prone to get lost in translation and soon give up trying to keep up with who is suing who and why, and who?s scoring more wins and where.

Essentially, Apple sued the main players in the Android business so far including Samsung, Motorola and HTC for alleged patent infringement, but it didn?t go directly after Google. In turn, the three Android makers countersued Apple individually, bringing their own patents to the fight, and Google watched from the sidelines, deciding not to sue Apple directly ? it did try to provide some ammunition to HTC, but the patents it shared with the Taiwanese company were shot down in court recently.

[Update: One of our readers points out that Motorola sued Apple first, which is true. The company sued Apple in October 2010, but Apple sued Motorola back during the same month.]

Since Google completed its extraordinarily expensive $12.5 billion Motorola purchase?back in May, it found itself involved in a plethora of legal battles, with Apple but also with Microsoft.

When Google announced its plans to acquire Motorola last year, analysts and members of the media speculated on the fact that the Search giant is willing to pay $12.5 billion for the company in order to arm itself with a huge collection of patents, many of them essential for the cell phone business. At the time the purchase offer was made, the Apple vs Android legal war was raging on, so it seemed logical to see Motorola?s patents as important defensive and offensive weapons against Apple, and anyone else that would attack Android.

But now that Google has inherited all of Motorola?s legal predicaments, the Search giant is far from putting that impressive patent collection to good use. We?re certainly interested to see whether the conflict with Apple will further escalate, or whether the two companies will find a common ground in the near future and reach a settlement.

motorola razr vs apple iphone 4s

Meanwhile, Apple and Google are basically suing each other in various courts, both in the U.S. and in Europe, and this fight may become one of the most important battles yet in the mobile environment now that Google is directly involved.

Earlier this week, a Federal Judge decided to dismiss an Apple case against Motorola (and therefore Google) with prejudice, meaning that neither party can refile the suit in a Federal court. Both companies asked for an injunction against the other?s products, with Apple having four patents left in the fight against one of Motorola?s. At the time, Judge Posner revealed his opposition to awarding injunctions to any company based on FRAND patents, or standards-essential patents. And that Motorola patent used in the trial is a FRAND patent.

Why is this important to know? Well, Motorola scored a victory against Apple back in April at the International Trade Commission before being purchased by Google. Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) Thomas Pender found in his initial determination that Apple was infringing a 3G patent owned by Motorola. The patent, one of the four Motorola attacked with in this complaint with the ITC, targeted Apple?s iOS devices including the iPhone and the iPad. This patent is a FRAND patent as well, but not the same one Motorola used in Federal Court against Apple.

The ALJ?s initial finding was not a final decision, and the final ruling of the Commission can overturn it. In fact,?Bloomberg?on Monday reported that the ITC decided to review the ALJ?s initial determination and issue a final ruling on August 24.

Google And Motorola Ordered To Share Android Development Data With Apple

In theory, in case Google will win this battle, the ITC can award an import ban against iPhones and iPads, which would mean that Apple would not be able to bring the devices that are manufactured in China to the U.S. anymore. In case that sounds familiar, that?s what happened with HTC in one of its legal fights with Apple. The iPhone maker won an import ban with that ?data tapping? patent ? a patent it also uses against Motorola and Samsung in other suits. Also worth mentioning is that Apple and HTC are still arguing on the matter, as Apple claims that more HTC devices continue to infringe that patent, and therefore the product ban should cover 29 more devices including the HTC EVO 4G LTE and the HTC One X. That only goes to show how complicated these ITC trials are, and how product import bans affect the companies involved in these lawsuits.

But Google?s ITC complaint is slightly different as it?s based on a single patent, and that one is a standards-essential patent. Motorola is already investigated in the European Union for its FRAND patent use in such patent-based trials, right alongside Samsung, and it?s probably unlikely to see major injunctions and/or import bans on FRAND patents alone.

Moreover, various third parties formally voiced their support for Apple and Microsoft in their defending ITC cases against FRAND patents owned by Motorola including U.S. senators and Congressmen, the United States Federal Trade Commission, HP, Nokia, Intel, AT&T, Verizon, IBM, Activision Blizzard, Cisco and others.

With all that in mind, we can?t but wonder what the ITC ruling will be, but considering what?s at play and the fact that Google is only relying on one FRAND patent in this fight, an iPhone and iPad import ban seems highly unlikely. And, for the sake of the argument, the same goes for Microsoft products including the Xbox gaming console, which is targeted by Google in a different ITC case. But the two companies may end up licensing the technology from Google, or enter other settlements with the Search giant.

We?ll be back with more details about this ITC Google vs Apple case, as the two companies will have to answer to various questions from the Commission in the following months (see PDF file at the Source link below), many of them referring specifically to FRAND patents and whether they?re suitable for such import ban requests.

Methods Of Parent Involvement In Early Childhood Education

by Thelma Kent on June 24, 2012

Parent involvement in early childhood education is a very important aspect in the growth and development of a child. Decisions that a care giver undertakes right from the time a child steps into kindergarten can affect this young one positively or negatively. Research has been made in the past and acknowledged that children whose care givers have reading time with them at home are better advantaged when it comes to factors such as academic.

Teachers are highly advised to help the care givers take time and look at the progress of their children in school. Mothers/ fathers are highly advised to get to know the teachers better and show interest in keeping this healthy relationship. Once a mother or father feels that a teacher is honestly concerned for their daughter or son, then they will put effort not to let that teacher down by extending their help to realize this achievement.

Communication with the mothers by means of phone calls or letters from the teacher is equally beneficial. Having a one way communication disseminates information to moms. Two-way communication between a close relative and a teacher creates room to share more and both parties can tell their feelings, fears, hopes and also ways to help this child move forward.

One good turn deserves another. A successful student should be acknowledged. Celebrating a Child?s performance is a sure way of motivating them to work harder. Close relative can be invited to join in the celebration thus strengthening the bond with their kids.

Schools should practice flexibility while scheduling any school events. This is because some care givers got such tight schedules and therefore, could be left out on all the events. They can have a try on Saturdays as most offices are not open. However, if the care giver is still unavailable, there can be a home visit plan or even a phone all just to update them on the progress of the child.

parent involvement in early childhood education is highly recommended. Schools that help out the next of kin achieve this facilitate in reducing stress on families in raising their children. Teachers help the family member in learning what is going on with their children as they keep the communication alive.

You can visit the website http://www.bridge2successdesign.com for more helpful information about parent involvement in early childhood education.

PFT: Ex-BU hoopster charged with extorting RGIII

7753611adeee4ae3af86172c5cd1b1a9AP

Since it?s supposed to be a slow week, here?s an item that is best suited for consideration during a slow week.

Colts owner Jim Irsay has taken to Twitter to call me out personally for a joke included at the bottom of a Saturday item regarding Irsay?s position that marketing rights aren?t holding up an eventual contract with quarterback Andrew Luck.

Since most of the latest available pictures of Luck show him wearing a mortar board and a gown tied and draped over his shoulders like an Andy Bernard sweater, and given that the topic of the item was Luck?s marketing rights via the poorly-crafted tweets of Jim Irsay, I closed with this:? ?Luck likely will be free to endorse whatever he wants to endorse, including the use of images of his Stanford graduation to be included in a campaign for online courses aimed at teaching rich, middle-aged white guys how to type legibly on Twitter.?

It was a slap at Irsay?s notorious habit of oft-indecipherable Twitter messages, and using the term ?rich, middle-aged white guys? was aimed at describing Irsay?s overall demographic.

Irsay didn?t see it that way.? On Monday morning, Irsay started the debate with this:

Then, without a response, he said this:

I considered not taking the bait; after all, the guy owns an NFL team.? But like I mentioned above, it?s slow right now.? Also, I wasn?t entirely comfortable with the not-so-subtle effort to suggest that I expect only white people to type legible Twitter message.? (For the record, I expect everyone to type legibly on Twitter.)? Besides, Irsay asked a question.? The least I could do was answer it.

A loyal PFT reader (I knew there was at least one) thereafter responded to the kerfuffle. Irsay then replied to Wes LaFever?s tweet with this:

So, basically, Jim Irsay thinks I?m a racist and I don?t like old people (even though I?m now seven years into the legally-protected class of old people) and I don?t like rich people (even though I?d very much like to be one, someday).

Wow.? He really has cracked the code.

Now if only I could crack the code for interpreting 99.8 percent of his Twitter messages, this job would be a lot easier.

Despite the sleek aluminum construction, there's nothing spectacular about the Excite 10, and for $70 less, you could get an equally powerful, feature-rich Asus Transformer Pad TF300?($379.99, 4 stars). It's less expensive than the New Apple iPad?($499.99, 4.5 stars), but that extra $50 gets you a much more impressive high-resolution Retina display and access to a more expansive tablet-centric app market.

Design and Features
The three tablets in the Excite line look nearly identical, from the Excite 7.7?($499.99, 3.5 stars) to the massive Excite 13?($649.99, 3 stars). All share the same streamlined design, with textured aluminum back panels and plastic outer edges. At 10.3 by 7.0 by 0.35 inches (HWD) and 1.32 pounds, the Excite 10 is a hair thinner and lighter than the New iPad (9.5 by 7.31 by 0.37 inches, 1.46 pounds). Along the left edge are Volume and Power buttons, as well as an Orientation Lock switch. On the opposite edge you'll find a 3.5mm headphone jack, micro USB port, micro HDMI port, and a full-sized SD card slot. The latter will be a boon for photographers who use standard-size SD cards, but instead of a flap cover, the tablet ships with a detached plastic cover that must be removed to insert a card?I could see myself easily losing that and being left with a large, unprotected slot on the side of my tablet. Along the bottom edge is the proprietary power connector, flanked by two relatively loud but harsh-sounding speakers under grilles.

Unlike the smaller Excite 7.7, with its vibrant AMOLED display, the Excite 10 uses a standard Gorilla Glass coated LCD with an increasingly common 1,280-by-800-pixel resolution. That's not to say the 149.5-pixel-per-inch, 10.1-inch screen is bad; it's reasonably sharp and gets sufficiently bright. But it lags behind top Android competitors like the Asus Transformer Prime TF201?($499.99, 4 stars) with its brighter 1,280-by-800-pixel Super IPS+ display. And it's no match for the New iPad's 264-pixel-per-inch, 2,048-by-1,536 display.

There's a 2-megagpixel front-facing camera and a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera. And like with most tablets, you'll only want to rely on the Excite 10 for casual photos and videos, as the cameras aren't great. The Excite 10 is a Wi-Fi-only tablet that connects to 802.11b/g/n networks on the 2.4GHz band only. You also get integrated GPS and Bluetooth 3.0.

Performance and Software
The Excite 10 is powered by the same quad-core 1.3GHz Nvidia Tegra 3 processor found on both the 7.7 and 13-inch models. As such, performance is largely uniform across the board, with very good overall system marks. These are among the fastest Android tablets available right now, and the Excite 10 delivers performance on par with the Asus Transformer Pad TF300, as well as Acer's quad-core powered Iconia Tab A510?($449.99, 3 stars). The base model ships with 16GB of internal storage, which can be expanded by a full-sized SD card (our 64GB SanDisk microSD card with SD adapter worked fine). I did notice occasional hang-ups, however, when adding and removing SD cards, and in a few instances I had to perform a hard reset. Otherwise, everything runs smoothly, whether it's switching between multiple running apps, watching HD video, or playing a demanding game like Riptide GP.

In the Excite line, Toshiba has left Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich untouched. There are no OS modifications, and only a few pre-loaded apps. You get third-party apps like Amazon Kindle and Quickoffice,?which are genuinely useful, as well as some Toshiba-branded apps that lead to content portals for e-books and other media. While I wouldn't consider any of them bloatware, the fact that you can't remove the apps is pesky.

Media playback was fine with H.264, MPEG4, WMV, DivX, and Xvid videos running smoothly at up to 1080p resolution. For audio, the Excite 10 played WMA, OGG, WAV, MP3, FLAC, and AAC formats without issue.

The 5-megapixel rear camera is average as far as tablet cameras go. Indoors, image noise is an issue and video frame rates drop precipitously, making the footage appear jerky. Outdoors, the 1080p video looks smooth and still images look reasonably sharp, but I wouldn?t rely on the camera for anything but casual shots.

In our battery rundown test, which loops a video with screen brightness set to maximum and Wi-Fi on, the Excite 10 lasted for 6 hours, 12 minutes. The 10-inch Transformer T300 turned in a slightly better 7 hours, 53 minutes, while the same-size Iconia Tab A510 turned in 9 hours, 34 minutes in the same test. The A510 is the bulkiest of the bunch, which makes room for a larger battery, while the Excite 10 is the slimmest of the three.

Conclusions
The Toshiba Excite 10 is everything the Excite 10 LE should have been, with a faster quad-core processor and better build quality. It's among the most-capable Android tablets available today, but you can find similar performance and more versatility in the more affordable Asus Transformer Pad TF300. Then there are Asus's docking accessories that essentially turn its tablets into netbooks. The Excite 10 is a better choice than the awkwardly large 13-inch Excite 13, but the Excite 7.7 is the best of the bunch with its excellent AMOLED screen and equally zippy performance. In the end, our Editors' Choice for large-screen tablets remains with the New iPad given its ultra-high-resolution Retina display, top-notch OS, and vast collection of tablet-centric apps.?

Baldwin defends self, drops pants for Letterman

By Randee Dawn

He may or may not?be facing criminal charges after his latest run-in with paparazzi, but Alec Baldwin is keeping a good sense of humor about the Tuesday incident. He visited "The Late Show with David Letterman" Wednesday night and talked about the photo of him that appeared on the front cover of The Daily News.

The "30 Rock" star pointed to his face in the photo, noting?that he was forming the letter "f" with his mouth when it was taken. As he explained, it was merely a prelude to querying the photographer about what f-stop he was using to take the picture.?

"No one got punched," said Baldwin. "I think if I punched him, I would be in a jail right now, and rightfully so."

And then, later on,?the actor?went on to drop his pants to reveal how much weight he's lost recently. So, all in a day's work for the actor-comedian.

16th century French queen's pin found in toilet

(AP) ? It may be the Renaissance equivalent of a royal flush.

A hairpin belonging to 16th century French Queen Catherine de Medici has been discovered at a royal residence outside Paris. What has conservators scratching their heads is exactly where it was found: down a communal toilet.

Officials said it's the first time in modern history that a possession of the Renaissance royal has been found at Fontainebleau Palace.

Though the queen was renowned across Europe for her lavish jewelry, much of her collection has been lost, sold or stolen over the centuries.

The rare 9 centimeter- (3.5 inch-) pin was identified easily because it bore interlocking C's ? for "Catherine."

After the age-old soil was cleaned off, Fontainebleau Palace's conservator Vincent Droguet also noted a finish of white and green, known to be Catherine's colors.

Less easy for the experts, however, was to explain why the personal possession of a queen known for luxury would end up in a Renaissance-era communal toilet ? as opposed to her royal one.

The artifact was found by accident as archeologists dug around the toilet to prepare the surrounding area for restoration.

Droguet called the find a "mystery."

"But what would Catherine de Medici be doing there? Maybe it was a lady-in-waiting who took it. Perhaps it was stolen, and just fell in."

More than 80% data centre consultants willing to pay higher price for energy-efficiency systems, survey finds

Australia?s data centre managers and consultants are near unanimous in believing that deployment of new energy-efficient data centre systems technology is worth the higher price that this new infrastructure commands.

86% of organisations are prepared to pay a price premium for energy-efficient IT infrastructure. Only 6% of respondents nominated price as a driving priority in designing new data centres. 67% of respondents are now designing data centres with up to 50 kW load per rack while one in three consultants believe that data centres built today have up to a 10-year operating life span. The survey found that one in three organisations are prepared to pay higher prices for equipment that has shorter order lead times, including surge protectors, uninterruptible power supplies and generators.

At the same time, however, the survey found that only 3% of consultants prioritised energy efficiency in the design of a data centre compared to 84% who highlighted the need for reliability in any data centre planning.

The poll, conducted last month by diversified power management company Eaton, surveyed 67 Australian data centre managers and consultants during May 2012. The survey was designed to provide a snapshot of current data centre planning in Australia.

Those vendors able to provide end-to-end data infrastructure are set to benefit most with more than one in three (37%) of respondents indicating a preference in dealing with a single vendor and sole contract scenario for items, including power distribution, power quality and rack distribution. Indeed, 78% of consultants claim they rely on an IT vendor?s specialist knowledge and advice to assist in designing power distribution and power-quality systems for mission-critical applications.

Michael Mallia, Senior Product Line Manager Power Quality - Asia Pacific Electrical Sector, Eaton, said, ?Data centres are costly facilities that consume prodigious amounts of power, water, natural resources and space, and this survey now confirms that data centre operators are continually searching for ways to build and operate their facilities sustainably and with greater reliability.

?While businesses have been designing data centres for decades, along the way they?ve grown steadily more skilled at constructing and retrofitting facilities in ways that boost their efficiency, increase their availability and lighten their environmental impact. This survey would suggest that today?s economic pressures and environmental concerns now have many businesses looking to lower their energy bills and reduce carbon emissions.?

Onkyo mid-range networking home theatres flaunt 4K image, multi-source PIP

onkyo-mid-range-networking-home-theatres-flaunt-4k

We've seen the high and low ends, and now Onkyo has thrown its alphabet soup of networking and A/V tech into its mid-range HT-S6500 5.1 surround ($799) and HT-S7500 7.1 ($899) home theater systems. For starters, the systems will support 4K displays, and use a Marvel Qdeo to automatically upscale HD to the higher resolution. Audio-wise, they'll pump out 80 watts of WRAT sound with 192Khz 24-bit TI DACs and a 32-bit DSP processing chip, and 120 watts of thump through the subs. There's a plethora of connectivity options with up to seven HDMI inputs -- and PIP to see them all at once -- along with direct iDevice connections, optional WiFi adapter and and other digital and analog I/O. On top of full DNLA support and most internet radio options, Onkyo will also allow iPhone or Android phones to control either receiver with its remote control app. So if you've been jonesing on TrueHD 5.1 Audio or those new 4K displays, now you'll have two more options to play them through.

Thankfully, Software Is Eating The Personal Investing World

572826_306854_1126028472_nLiquidity fever is in the air in Silicon Valley. I felt this viscerally last month when a friend from Facebook came to me to talk investing.?A talented engineer who has been at the company for more than five years, my friend just reaped a pretty nice IPO payday. As you might expect, he?s been contacted by a seemingly endless list of investment advisors, slightly different in their approaches but all promising the same things ? a steady hand at the till, privileged access to top flight investment funds, and a portfolio that?s lower risk and higher return than the market.?Fed up with all the competing claims, he has started thinking about investing his money himself. After all, he must be bright enough to outsmart the fickle fools who seem to follow Jim Cramer?s every whim. Right??He wanted to know what I thought he should do. My first response was to slap him on the back and congratulate him again.?It?s a rare and special time when so many people are rewarded so spectacularly for their hard work and ingenuity.?As an entrepreneur myself, I love to see people with the courage to take an uncharted path succeed. But my second response was...

Samsung CEO plans to improve software, user experience and design

Android Central

Anyone who's used a Samsung smartphone over the past few years will be aware that the company's approach to software design can be a little scattershot at times. And it seems there's an awareness of this issue at the highest levels of the company, as new Samsung CEO Kwon Oh-hyun delivered his inaugural speech.

According to reports from The Wall Street Journal?, Kwon told Samsung employees --

"A particular focus must be given to serving new customer experience and value by strengthening soft capabilities in software, user experience, design, and solutions."

As we pointed out in our review of the company's latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S III, software design is one area in which Samsung lags behind competitors like HTC. Where HTC's Sense 4 has a clear and consistent design language, TouchWiz is more a disparate set of apps with few common design cues.

With the manufacturer putting increasing emphasis on the importance of improving software, users will be hoping for prettier, more intuitive software in future Samsung smartphones. However, given that the latest version of TouchWiz, dubbed the "TouchWiz Nature UX", has just debuted on the Galaxy S III, smartphone buyers will likely have to wait for next year's Samsung flagship before they see any tangible changes.
