Asia's trend-setters feeling iPhone fatigue

4 hrs.

SINGAPORE?? Apple's iconic iPhone is losing some of its luster among Asia's well-heeled consumers in Singapore and Hong Kong, a victim of changing mobile habits and its own runaway success.

Driven by a combination of iPhone fatigue, a desire to be different and a plethora of competing devices, users are turning to other brands, notably those from Samsung Electronics, eating into Apple's market share.

In Singapore, Apple's products were so dominant in 2010 that more devices here ran its iOS operating system per capita than anywhere else in the world.

But StatCounter, which measures traffic collected across a network of 3 million websites, calculates that Apple's share of mobile devices in Singapore ? iPad and iPhone ? declined sharply last year. From a peak of 72 percent in January 2012, its share fell to 50 percent this month, while Android devices now account for 43 percent of the market, up from 20 percent in the same month last year.

In Hong Kong, devices running Apple's iOS now account for about 30 percent of the total, down from about 45 percent a year ago. Android accounts for nearly two-thirds.

"Apple is still viewed as a prestigious brand, but there are just so many other cool smartphones out there now that the competition is just much stiffer," said Tom Clayton, chief executive of Singapore-based Bubble Motion, which develops a popular regional social media app called Bubbly.

Leading indicators
Where Hong Kong and Singapore lead, other key markets across fast-growing Asia usually follow.

"Singapore and Hong Kong tend to be, from an electronics perspective, leading indicators on what is going to be hot in Western Europe and North America, as well as what is going to take off in the region," said Jim Wagstaff, who runs a Singapore-based company called Jam Factory?that's developing mobile apps for enterprises.

Southeast Asia is adopting smartphones fast ? consumers spent 78 percent more on smartphones in the 12 months up to September 2012 than they did the year before, according to research company GfK.

Android rising
Anecdotal evidence of iPhone fatigue isn't hard to find: Where a year ago iPhones swamped other devices on the subways of Hong Kong and Singapore, they are now outnumbered by Samsung and HTC smartphones.

While this is partly explained by the proliferation of Android devices, from the cheap to the fancy, there are other signs that Apple has lost followers.

Singapore entrepreneur Aileen Sim recently launched an app for splitting bills called BillPin, settling on an iOS version because that was the dominant platform in the three countries she was targeting ? Singapore, India and the United States.

"But what surprised us was how strong the call for Android was when we launched our app," she said.

Indeed, 70 percent of their target users ? 20-something college students and fresh graduates ? said they were either already on Android or planned to switch over.

"Android is becoming really hard to ignore, around the region and in the U.S. for sure, but surprisingly even in Singapore," she said. "Even my younger early-20s cousins are mostly on Android now."

BillPin launched an Android version this month.

Standing out from the crowd
Napoleon Biggs, chief strategy officer at Gravitas Group, a Hong Kong-based mobile marketing company, said that while Apple and the iPhone remained premium brands there, Samsung's promotional efforts were playing to an increasingly receptive audience.

For some, it is a matter of wanting to stand out from the iPhone-carrying crowd. Others find the higher-powered, bigger-screened Android devices better suited to their changing habits ? watching video, writing Chinese characters ? while the cost of switching devices is lower than they expected, given that most popular social and gaming apps are available for both platforms.

"Hong Kong is a very fickle place," Biggs said.

Janet Chan, a 25-year-old Hong Kong advertising executive, has an iPhone 5, ?but its fast-draining battery and the appeal of a bigger screen for watching movies is prodding her to switch to a Samsung Galaxy Note II.

"After Steve Jobs died, it seems the element of surprise in product launches isn't that great anymore," she said.

Shifting trends
To be sure, there are still plenty of people buying Apple devices. Stores selling their products in places such as Indonesia were full over the Christmas holidays, and the company's new official store in Hong Kong's Causeway Bay has queues snaking out of the door most days.

But the iPhone's drop in popularity in trendy Hong Kong and Singapore is mirrored in the upmarket malls of the region.

"IPhones are like Louis Vuitton handbags," said marketing manager Narisara Konglua in Bangkok, who uses a Galaxy SIII. "It's become so commonplace to see people with iPads and iPhones so you lose your cool edge having one."

In the Indonesian capital Jakarta, an assistant manager at Coca Cola's local venture, Gatot Hadipratomo, agrees. The iPhone "used to be a cool gadget, but now more and more people use it," Hadipratomo said.

There is another influence at play: hip Korea. Korean pop music, movies and TV are hugely popular around the region, and Samsung is riding that wave. And while the impact is more visible in Hong Kong and Singapore, it also translates directly to places like Thailand.

"Thais are not very brand-loyal," says Akkaradert Bumrungmuang, 24, a student at Mahidol University in Bangkok. "That's why whatever is hot or the in-thing to have is adopted quickly here. We follow Korea, so whatever is fashionable in Korea will be a big hit."

This report was written by Jeremy Wagstaff in Singapore, with additional reporting by Lee Chyen Yee in Hong Kong, Khettiya Jittapong and Amy Sawitta Lefevre in Bangkok, and Andjarsari Paramaditha in Jakarta.

'Downton Abbey' is hit with tragedy

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper , TODAY

Don't think for a minute that "Downton Abbey" isn't as soapy as "The Young and the Restless," or that any characters are safe. In a heart-wrenching turn on Sunday's episode, Sybil's childbirth at Downton went horribly, horribly wrong. While her childhood doctor Dr. Clarkson fought to have her taken to the hospital for a new-fangled C-section, the new doctor Robert brought in, Sir Philip Tapsell, insisted she would be fine.

Joss Barratt / Carnival Films

Lady Sybil and Tom hold their newborn daughter, for the family's one short moment of happiness.

She was not. After delivering a healthy daughter, Sybil went into eclampsia-prompted seizures and died while her family begged for someone, anyone, to do something. Cora blamed Robert, Robert blamed himself, and everyone is devastated, especially new widower Tom.

Sybil's death was agonizing to watch, especially the frustration of how the family's social class affected their decision-making. Robert wanted Sir Philip -- who'd delivered the children of duchesses -- to deliver his grandchild, and poor Dr. Clarkson's past work with Matthew and Lavinia didn't exactly help his cause. And Cora being on Clarkson's side -- "I would have taken her (to the hospital) an hour ago" -- didn't help, as she deferred to her husband, as was expected.

The death shook the massive house. Seeing the white-faced staff in nightclothes hearing the news and watching tough guy Thomas break down was a brilliant example of how much Sybil, the "sweetest spirit under this roof," was loved. And other moments nailed it as well -- the motherless baby's cry just as Sybil passed away, and the Dowager Countess' suddenly unsteady legs as she entered the house after hearing the news. "We've seen some troubles, you and I," she told Carson. "Nothing worse than this."

But darn it, Mary and Edith, can't you just get along? With Sybil's dead body lying before them, Edith tried again to get her oldest sister to say they'll try and pull together but Mary just can't do it.

The other plots couldn't help but be completely buried under the weight of Sybil's death. Isobel may regret hiring clumsy Ethel as her cook, but at least it's respectable work. New footman Jimmy's attractive to the female servants, but it's Thomas' interest in him that rattled him. Matthew was worried that he's infertile, even though he and Mary have only been wed a few months. Mary's furious that Matthew was tentatively questioning her father's business acumen. And Edith got an offer for a regular newspaper column, sparked by her letter to the Times about women's suffrage.

Joss Barratt / Carnival Films

Ladies Mary and Edith were thrilled to gain a niece, but later, even the loss of their sister couldn't pull them together.

Bates and Anna's plot received the most screen time after poor Sybil, but is there anyone out there who's not sick of this one yet? Vera Bates' best friend, Mrs. Bartlett, let slip to Anna that she saw Vera scrubbing pastry out from under her nails, which means that Vera herself made the poisoned pie that killed her. Getting Mrs. Bartlett to admit what she saw is going to be a challenge, but she'd better admit it soon, because time just stops when the cameras travel to Bates' dreary prison.

Rest in peace, Lady Sybil. Like Melanie in "Gone With the Wind," you were the quiet glue that held the Crawleys together, and with you gone, more cracks will emerge in the family facade.

Best Dowager Countess quotes:

  • "When may she expect an offer to appear on the London stage?" ?-- Because obviously that's Edith's next step after a newspaper column.
  • "If there is one thing that I am quite indifferent to it is Sir Philip Tapsell's feelings." -- If only Robert had felt the same way about Sybil's snooty doctor.
  • "A woman of my age can face reality far better than most men." -- So Robert, you needn't protect her from the word "urine."
  • "Don't look at me. Cora is right. The decision lies with the chauffeur." ?-- Tom may be Sybil's husband, but he still once drove cars at Downton, and no one will ever let him forget it.

UFC on Fox 6 results: Demetrious Johnson retains title, ?Rampage? loses in Octagon finale

CHICAGO -- The UFC's stop in the Windy City had two great knockouts, a champion holding onto his belt, and the last fight of a one-time champ.

Despite a strong start by John Dodson, Demetrious Johnson held onto his championship belt with a unanimous decision. The judges saw it 48-47, 49-46, 48-47 for Johnson.

Unsurprisingly, Johnson and Dodson fought a fast-paced first two rounds. Johnson tried to slow things down in the first round with a takedown. While he did get Dodson to to the ground, the challenger popped back to his feet quickly.

Dodson dropped Johnson twice in the second round, and shook off Johnson's take down attempts with a great sprawl. Johnson seemed to have a hard time even getting close to Dodson to land a punch.

A Johnson knee in the fourth round caused a small fight stoppage. Dodson's hand was on the ground as Johnson threw a knee to Dodson's head, which is an illegal strike. The bout was stopped as doctors checked Dodson's eye and Johnson was warned. The fight went on, but not without plenty of boos from the crowd in Chicago.

When the fight restarted, it was all Johnson. He controlled Dodson against the cage, and threw knees that busted up Dodson's face. Johnson was able to get a takedown at the beginning of the fifth round, too. Though boos rained down, Johnson kept the fight against the cage.

Later, the crowd got behind him as Johnson elevated, tightened his legs around Dodson's torso and threw elbows. It was a creative move that likely could only happen in the flyweight division. Johnson finished the round with Dodson against the cage, and knee after knee after knee to the body and face.

Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson vs. Glover Teixeira

If this really was Quinton "Rampage" Jackson's last fight in the UFC, it wasn't one to remember. He was outstruck and outwrestled by Glover Teixeira throughout their bout. Teixeira took the fight 30-27, 30-27, 29-28 on the judges' cards.

Teixeira's first round was his best, as he was able to take Jackson down early and mount him and take his back. Late in the round, Teixeira knocked Jackson down with a punch and looked close to finishing, but wasn't able to end the fight.

The rest of the fight featured a worn out Jackson trying to avoid Teixeira's takedown attempts unsuccessfully. Jackson threw some big punches, and even jawed at Teixeira during the bout, but he wasn't able to score any big offense.

While this fight will be remembered for being Jackson's last UFC bout, Teixeira scored his third straight UFC win on Saturday night. He looked impressive against the former champ.

Anthony Pettis vs. Donald Cerrone

Anthony Pettis won his much anticipated bout with Donald Cerrone by landing big, memorable strikes. Pettis was getting the better of their striking exchanges early, which set him up for a big finish. Pettis threw a kick that landed hard on Cerrone's body, then finished with a punch. Cerrone fell to the ground in a heap, and the fight was stopped at 2:35 in the first round.

Pettis lost his first fight in the UFC after coming from the WEC as the champ, but he's been winning ever since. He has wins over Joe Lauzon, Jeremy Stephens and now Cerrone. After the fight, he made a pitch to UFC president Dana White.

"I want my title shot. I should have had it years ago. People say I can?t wrestle because of the Guida fight, but I had a serious shoulder injury. Now I am 100 percent. No one can do in the Octagon what I can do."

While lightweight champion Benson Henderson has a fight set up with Gilbert Melendez, a shot for Pettis isn't unwarranted. It would be a rematch of their WEC title fight, which Pettis won in the promotion's final fight.

Ricardo Lamas vs. Erik Koch

Lamas won the first round by constantly pressuring Koch against the cage. It wasn't exactly the most thrilling round to have start a card on network television, but it led to a thrilling second round. Lamas took advantage of Koch's slip, and then finished the fight with nasty, nasty ground and pound. Lamas started with elbows, then started with strikes that cut open Koch's face. Koch had no answer for Lamas' relentless strikes, and the bout was stopped at 2:32 in the second round.

Lamas thought his performance warranted a title shot.

"I?ve beat Cub Swanson, I?ve beat Hioki and now I?ve beat Koch. All those guys were supposed to be fighting for the title at one point. I beat them all. We?re all here to be world champ and I am no different. I want the winner of Aldo vs Edgar next week. I don?t care who wins, I want the winner."

Long road ahead in Dreamliner probe

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. safety regulators are nowhere near finishing an investigation into a battery fire on the Boeing Co 787 Dreamliner, a top official said on Thursday, raising the prospect of a prolonged grounding for the plane.

Airlines have canceled hundreds of flights in the eight days since the plane was grounded, and Boeing has stopped deliveries of newly built jets.

The full financial impact on the planemaker is still not clear. Still, Boeing shares are actually up 1.3 percent since regulators said the plane - full of high-tech innovations that are supposed to be a model for future aviation - could not fly.

Deborah Hersman, chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, made clear that investigators have found a series of "symptoms" in the battery damaged in a January 7 fire in Boston, but not the underlying cause of the problem.

"We are early in our investigation, we have a lot of activities to undertake," Hersman told a news conference.

"This is an unprecedented event. We are very concerned. We do not expect to see fire events on board aircraft. This is a very serious air safety concern."

She rebuffed multiple questions on how long the investigation would take, making clear it could be weeks or more. She also would not say when the 787 would fly again, which is in the hands of the Federal Aviation Administration.

Former NTSB Chairman Mark Rosenker said the briefing made it clear that the investigators had come up short in their hunt for the cause of the battery fire.

"It's going to take them longer," he said in an interview. "Weeks, not days."

Boeing and its regulators have said they do not know when the 787 will fly again. It has been grounded worldwide since a plane by All Nippon Airways made an emergency landing in Japan on January 16 after a battery incident, which Hersman said may or may not have been a fire.

That emergency landing came after a fire occurred on a Japan Airlines Co Ltd 787 on the tarmac in Boston.

Boeing was not immediately available to comment on the latest NTSB statement. France's Thales, which makes the 787 battery system, declined to comment.

Other new planes had problems when they were introduced, but not fires, which makes this situation stand out, Rosenker said.

"Fire is something you don't fool with," he said. "You've got to understand that, particularly given the short period of time the aircraft has been flying."

DELAYS PERSIST

The NTSB and its Japanese equivalent are working together on their probes, though Hersman again insisted the work was still in the early stages.

"It is really very hard to tell at this point how long this investigation will take. We have all hands on deck," she said. "We're working as hard as we can to identify what the failure mode is here and what corrective actions need to be taken."

The 787 program was already years behind schedule before last week's grounding, which means Boeing cannot deliver newly manufactured planes to customers.

That means customers like United Continental Holdings Inc may have to wait even longer for planes on order. The company's United Airlines already flies six Dreamliners.

"History teaches us that all new aircraft types have issues and the 787 is no different," United Continental Chairman and Chief Executive Jeff Smisek said during the carrier's earnings conference call. "We continue to have confidence in the aircraft and in Boeing's ability to fix the issues, just as they have done on every other new aircraft model they've produced."

Smisek said Thursday the carrier still expects to take delivery of two more 787s in the second half of the year.

Boeing has already delivered 50 of the 787s. Around half have been in operation in Japan, but airlines in India, South America, Poland, Qatar and Ethiopia are also flying the planes, as is U.S. carrier United.

The grounding of the Dreamliner, an advanced carbon-composite plane with a list price of $207 million, has already forced hundreds of flight cancellations worldwide.

AIRBUS IMPACTS

The head of Boeing's European rival Airbus said it would study the 787 Dreamliner design review and make any changes to its future A350 jetliner that may be needed as a result of the U.S. findings.

"We believe so far we have a robust design, however we will draw the lessons from the 787," Airbus Chief Executive Fabrice Bregier told Reuters Television at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

"We will look at the recommendations and guidelines of the FAA and if by chance we need to change it we have plenty of time because this aircraft, the 350, will be delivered to our first customers not before the second half of 2014 ? so it is not a challenge and it is not a burden for us."

Billed as Europe's response to the Dreamliner, the A350 is due to enter service next year using lithium-ion batteries but without the same reliance on electrical systems as the 787, something Airbus says will put less burden on the batteries.

However, Airbus has so far declined to comment on how it would tackle a battery fire if one did break out on board.

One industry veteran said airline customers need absolute certainty that Boeing and regulators have solved the problem.

"You don't need details here to understand why people are terrified about the possibility of these batteries catching fire," Virginia-based consultant Loren Thompson said.

Logix9 gives insight on domain name selections

Domain nameWhen it comes to selecting a domain name, there are still a lot of open options. Digital marketing firm Logix9 weighs in on a couple points that may make the difference between success and failure.

It may seem like every domain name that can possibly be thought of is gone, but new websites pop up every minute. There are plenty of decent names to pick from, and it?s not always the first one that comes to mind.

Logix9, a digital marketing firm, offers training on how to pick the perfect domain name for a website. Here are a few of its top tips.

First, make the domain name the same as the name of the web site. It is usually assumed that they are the same, so anything less will be difficult for customers to remember and won?t be as easy to find. Don?t have people looking for a site named XYZ have to type in XYB.com to get there.

The second step is just as important as the first. Logix9 says the domain name has to be short and to the point. Don?t leave a whole lot of room for typos and don?t use dashes or underscores. Throwing a dash in there might be the only way to get the name that seems perfect, but chances are most customers won?t use the dash and the other company will make that sale. Domain names with anything other than letters isn?t just confusing for some, it can look like spam and turn off potential visitors.

Also, pick top-level domains. Many Americans won?t even know that a website can end in anything other than .com, .net, .org or .edu. Websites will try to sell some top-level domains like .co, .biz, .info and more. The name that may seem perfect will probably be available with one of those endings, but choosing anything other than the standard could be bad for business. This depends heavily on what the business is, however. A business reaching out to a tech-savvy audience may not be turned off by a domain name that ends with .co.

Finally, make sure to use keywords. Use the keywords that will be frequented on the website as well. For example, if the website is all about selling pasta, pasta should really be one of the first words in the domain name. Ignoring keywords could really hurt a website?s search ranking.

Logix9 helps customers succeed in marketing their businesses online daily.

'American Horror Story' finale leaves a survivor

By Lesley Goldberg, The Hollywood Reporter

Frank Ockenfels / FX

The cast of "American Horror Story: Asylum."

When all was said and done, only one person was left standing in FX's "American Horror Story: Asylum."

The season that has featured aliens, Nazis, serial killers, demented doctors, a nun possessed by Satan, the worst insane asylum ever and?Jessica Lange?singing "The Name Game" came to a whirlwind, time-jumping conclusion when?Sarah Paulson's aspiring reporter Lana was the one to survive.

"I always thought [Lana] was the smartest cookie in the jar," co-creator/executive producer?Ryan Murphy?told reporters at a recent screening of the episode. "I liked that the hero of this season was a heroine. I like that she was a lesbian. I like that she had an arc to her sexuality. I like that she went through a lot of different things. And I like that she got a happy ending. I like that she was in a loving, accepting relationship at the end."

After jumping to the present day, the openly gay Lana is a successful reporter, best-selling author and documentarian for her work in having uncovered the misdeeds inside Briarcliff. While she's being interviewed for a Kennedy Center Honor, her son (by rape) Johnny (Dylan McDermott) is nearby awaiting an epic confrontation with his mother -- who lied that her baby with Threadson (Zachary Quinto) never survived.

Photos from THR: 'American Horror Story': The spookiest set on TV

What comes is a showdown for the ages when she reveals -- on camera -- that she lied about his death, with the duo ultimately coming face to face after the crew clears out. Revealing that he wants his late father to be proud of him, Johnny holds his mother at gunpoint. Being the smooth-talking reporter she is, Lana talks him down and reveals that Johnny isn't the monster Threadson was and then proceeds to kill the guy who posed as Bloody Face and cut off Leo's (Adam Levine) arm in the series opener.

"The thing we were most interested in writing about this season was the stuff in the last episode and the documentary series Lana made about shutting down Briarcliff. That's one of the first things when the writers landed on the idea of 'Asylum,' that period of time, those documentaries that were made," Murphy said, pointing to efforts from ?and the feature "Prophecy"?as inspiration. "It also was about the unraveling health care system in our country and how so many people were dumped there and left to rot there and all those abuses that you see. ? That was our jumping-off point. We knew we were going to have that character go in there, become a prisoner ... and go back to tear the joint down. That was the ending, which we had from the very beginning."?

More small meat-eating dinosaurs than thought

Jan. 23, 2013 ? University of Alberta researchers used fossilized teeth to identify at least 23 species of small meat-eating dinosaurs that roamed western Canada and the United States, 85 to 65 million years ago.

Until now, only seven species of small two-legged meat-eating dinosaurs from the North American west had been identified.

U of A palaeontologist Philip Currie and student Derek Larson examined a massive dataset of fossil teeth that included samples from members of the families to which Velociraptor and Troodon (possibly the brainiest dinosaur) belong.

"Small meat-eating dinosaur skeletons are exceedingly rare in many parts of the world and, if not for their teeth, would be almost completely unknown," said Larson.

The researchers say the huge increase in the number of small meat-eating species to 23, shows that instead of a few species existing for many millions of years, there were actually many small meat-eating species, each existing for shorter periods of time.

"We can identify what meat-eaters lived in what geographic area or geologic age," explained Currie. "And we can do this by identifying just their teeth, which are far more common than skeletons."

Amgen 4Q profit drops 16 pct. on higher spending

Drugmaker Amgen Inc. on Wednesday posted a 16 percent drop in fourth-quarter profit, as higher costs for production, marketing, research and other items offset higher sales for many of its biologic medicines. The results fell short of Wall Street expectations.

The world's biggest biotech company, based in Thousand Oaks, Calif., said net income was $788 million, or $1.01 per share, for the three months ended Dec. 31. That was down from $934 million, or $1.08 per share, a year earlier.

Excluding one-time items, net income would have been $1.40 per share. That's 4 cents less than analysts expected, on average, according to research provider FactSet.

In after-hours trading, Amgen shares fell 21 cents to $82.86. They had fallen 22 cents in the regular session before the results were released.

The maker of anemia treatments Aranesp and Epogen said revenue rose 11 percent to $4.42 billion. Analysts predicted sales of $4.37 billion.

Sales were led by immune disorder treatment Enbrel, up 23 percent from the 2011 quarter to $1.16 billion, and Neulasta and Neupogen for fighting infection in cancer patients. They had a combined $1.31 billion in sales, down 1 percent.

Sales of Aranesp and Epogen fell 9 percent and 1 percent, respectively, to a combined $968 million.

Several newer drugs had double-digit jumps in revenue, including Prolia for osteoporosis, Xgeva for preventing fractures in cancerous bones and Sensipar for excessive calcium levels and a thyroid disorder.

"We enter 2013 with good momentum, a broad late-stage pipeline and a continued focus on building our business internationally," Amgen CEO Robert A. Bradway said in a statement.

The company expects 2013 earnings per share of $6.85 to $7.15. That's above the average prediction of analysts for $7 per share.

Amgen predicted 2013 revenue will fall between $17.8 billion to $18.2 billion, compared with Wall Street's forecast for sales of $17.75 billion.

Amgen noted its free cash flow rose to $5.2 billion for 2012, from $4.5 billion in 2011.

For the full year, net income was $4.35 billion, or $5.52 per share. That was up from $3.68 billion, or $4.04 per share, in 2011. The 2012 per-share results got a significant boost from a sharp reduction in the number of outstanding shares.

Revenue rose 11 percent in 2012, to $17.27 billion from $15.58 billion.

This roleplay hasn't started yet!

Asphodel Meadows

Two otherworldly creatures have their eyes set on Earth. One wants to use Earth like a farm for its army, the other is curious about the life on Earth. They've warred over the control of Earth, but neither has won. After much deliberation, they created a game where the people of Earth decide whom will control the fate of Earth. This game takes place in Port City, a bustling metropolis on an island. The participants in this game are Chosen Ones, people who are given gifts and partners and are able to enter the war in a separate dimension called Asphodel Meadows, which takes place in the mind of the Dreamer.

Port City

In Asphodel Meadows, the world is warped, odd... strange. Those who enter cannot stay for long before they become a piece of the fabric of the dream world. To end the existence of the Meadows, the Chosen Ones must find the Dreamer and end the dream. The fate of Earth depends on it. But the Dreamer has the power to create and the creations aim to protect the Dreamer from anything.

Port City: Asphodel Meadows

Still, even to gain entry to the world, the Chosen One must follow one of the two creatures. The followers of Nyarlahotep, who wishes to farm Earth, are one team. The followers of Demiritashotep, who is curious about the life on Earth, is the other. Whichever team reaches the Dreamer first is the team whose leader has won.

That's where you come in. What is the fate of life on Earth? Will we be farmed like cattle and used as food? Or will we be at the whim of a curious overseer? Pick a side, pick a partner... and join the game.

Rules

So if you visit the page for Asphodel Meadows, there's like, a million rules. It seems like a lot... but they're mostly just guidelines. I actually don't expect most people to read more than just the general rules, which I'm posting here! The remaining rules are there mostly so that when something goes wrong I can point you to the front page. It's just that I can see tons of places where this can go horribly wrong and I'm trying to circumvent that before the roleplay begins.

Sirius is the judge/quest giver in-game, as well as the character who will remove your character from the game (usually) via death.

General Rules

-No Godmoding. You get one warning in game from Sirius and one warning in the OOC and then you're out of the game.

-You can have more than one character. I might ask you to wait, especially if we have a lot of characters, but that doesn't mean you can't have them. If you create a profile and I agree to create your character but we have too many characters playing at the moment, I'll probably wait about a week before letting your new character play.

-Romance is allowed, but it's not the forefront so please obey the rules of the site on that one as far as what you can post is concerned.

-There is a high school in Port City. If your character goes there, that's fine. However, this is not a high school roleplay, so there is probably not going to to be anything worth discussing at the highschool. Therefore, I request that you timeskip over high school activities if you are going to use them.

-Sirius will appear to you to answer questions if you have them and you don't want to go to the OOC, but you can't fight Sirius. So please, no calling Sirius out to fight.

-Cursing? Totally allowed. I ask that you don't just spend an entire post cursing up a storm unless it's absolutely necessary for your character to do so, though.

-Please, please, please read posts before yours carefully. It doesn't have to be EVERY post before yours because I understand that's difficult. Do try to carefully read at least the ones that have to do with your character, though.

-I don't have a limit on your posts, but... I don't like horrendous grammar. So please try to have good grammar, thank you very much. Spelling I can handle to an extent. I don't want to say you need to be "semi-literate", because that seems more like a question of whether or not you're able to read. I'm asking that you use proper language. If you're not a Native English speaker, that's fine. But you'll have to let me know beforehand that you're not native-speaking.

-Even though there's no limit on your posts, please don't rapid fire one sentence responses. It's fine if it's a few times, but if all of your posts are one liners, it gets kind of annoying for everyone else. If people start complaining about it, I might ask you to clarify.

-As far as time is concerned... your character has to leave Asphodel Meadows every now and then. I'd say... for the beginning of this roleplay, anyway... If your character isn't fighting someone but uses their lowest powered spell five times, then they can't use their spells anymore. In a battle, it can be more than that, but your character has to rest after a battle. So, if you're in a battle that occurs and you fight a ton, you should probably stay out of Asphodel Meadows for a few posts. Sirius will eventually power up your character/this will change if we end up with problems, so don't start thinking I'm trying to restrict how much happens in Asphodel.

-Outside of Asphodel, your character has a job and a family. It's not necessary to talk about it (see the high school rule above), but you can use the outer world for planning and sabotage and things like that. I'm trying to say there's action everywhere, not just in Asphodel.

-I will warn you when you're treading on the rules (and you only have two warnings), but I will remove warnings. When I do that, have your character give Sirius a piece of candy in-game. Random gifts of candy to Sirius when you aren't in trouble are fine too, but I probably will check in-game rather than the OOC when I'm just quickly looking over the game.

Characters

Human characters in this game have partners who share their bodies until the human enters Asphodel Meadows. Therefore, on this page I'll list characters, partners, and also the Gift given to the character. But there are none right now.

Are you confused? Dislike something? Want to give me endless praise? (That last one is probably not a thing you want to do.) Use the OOC thread for most things... or PM me any questions having to do with your character specifically.

UK's Blair feels "huge stab of anxiety" about EU referendum

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's pro-EU former Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair said on Wednesday he felt a "huge stab of anxiety" about the prospect of an in/out referendum on the European Union.

His Conservative successor David Cameron has pledged to give Britons a referendum choice on whether to stay in the EU if he wins an election in 2015.

Speaking from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Blair told Sky TV that Britain's eventual exit from the EU was now on the agenda.

"The thing that sends a huge stab of anxiety through any of us that believe that Britain's place in the 21st Century has got to be as a key player in the largest political union, the biggest business market in the world, is that we're now putting on the table the prospect of Britain leaving Europe in a referendum in four or five years' time," he said.

"Why would we do that now? We don't know what the rest of Europe is going to propose by way of changes resulting from this euro crisis, we don't know yet the detail of what we're going to argue in Europe," he added.

"Surely what is better is to have that debate, try and shape the process in Europe and then decide where we are."

Blair said he agreed with Cameron when he said in a landmark speech earlier on Wednesday that reform was needed in Europe.

"Ninety percent of that speech is ... the British Prime Minister addressing the British national interest," he said.

"It's the climax to the speech (the referendum pledge) that I'm afraid is really about the internal European problem in the Conservative party and how they placate this UKIP party."

The Conservatives have long argued amongst themselves about whether Britain should be an EU member, a division eagerly exploited by the small but vociferous anti-EU UK Independence Party (UKIP) which is rising in opinion polls.

Blair added: "There's got to be a compelling reason to put that (referendum) question on the agenda. I don't see that compelling reason now."

3 Different Education Savings Plans Compared - Trusts - New York ...

During tax season, you hear about all sorts of tools to help you save on taxes and help you plan your investments more prudently. If you have children, you might want to consider saving for their education.

There are several options for education savings. The three that most people consider are the custodial account, the Coverdell ESA, and the 529 Plan.

Let's look at all three.

Custodial Accounts

These accounts are like basic trusts for minors. An adult opens an account for the benefit of a minor. The custodial accounts are an irrevocable gift to the minor. You can contribute up to the gift tax annual exclusion amount every year (that's $14,000 per recipient by an individual or $28,000 by a married couple).

  • Tax Benefits: The first $950 of unearned income is tax-free. The next $950 is taxed at the child's federal tax rate.
  • Pros: The amount in the account isn't just limited to education expenses. The funds in the account can be used for any reason to benefit the minor.
  • Cons: It's not tax-deferred. The investment earnings in the account are taxed. Also, this account is in the child's name and as such, can effect the child's eligibility for financial aid.

Coverdell ESA

These plans let you contribute up to $2,000 per beneficiary annually until that child turns 18.

  • Tax Benefits: The earnings are tax-deferred. Also, qualified withdrawals are tax-free.
  • Pros: The earnings are tax-deferred. Another good thing about Coverdell plans is that they can be used to pay for elementary and secondary education.
  • Cons: You can only contribute a certain amount per year. Also, these plans are limited to those within a certain income bracket. Married couples with a gross income of over $220,000, and single filers with a gross income of $110,000, are excluded from contributing to this plan.

The 529 Plan

These plans allow tax deferred growth of investment earnings.

  • Tax benefits: You don't pay tax on investment earnings until you withdraw the money (they're tax deferred). If the money is withdrawn for education, it's tax-free.
  • Pros: You can gift up to $70,000 per individual or $140,000 per married couple annually without incurring gift tax.
  • Cons: These plans apply to post-secondary education expenses.

The five dumbest cell phone names of all time

Top-five Worst Cell Phone NamesSmartphones

The rumor about an upcoming new iPhone called ?iPhone Math? was interesting on many levels. It would be fascinating to see how well an iPhone phablet would sell. But it would also be funny if Apple (AAPL) truly launched a product with a name this stupid. The competition for the dumbest phone name is currently fierce and there is no shortage of strong contenders out there. Here?s my top-five:

[More from BGR: Two new 4-inch iPhones set to debut this year, iPhone with larger display to launch in 2014 or later]

  1. BLU Tank is my current favorite. It combines an annoying misspelling of a color with senseless capitalization of an entire word. As a kicker, the ?Tank? portion of the name is misleading and inappropriate for a model that weighs just 92 grams and is only 0.59 inches thick. Packing this much stupidity into only eight letters is an art form.
  2. Yezz Zenior YZ888 is a hot challenger. It features the double whammy of using three consecutive Z letters in the actual phone name? and then adding a repulsive and meaningless code. This makes remembering the name correctly difficult and pronouncing it impossible. Smooth.
  3. Spice M-5365 Boss Killer. This atrocity kicks off with a meaningless and unwieldy code and then segues insanely into a violent and tasteless name that can be interpreted as a reference to workplace murder. For sheer weirdness, this one is hard to top. Disappointingly, everything is spelled correctly and there are no randomly capitalized letters.
  4. Micromax Superfone Punk A44. This one has a nice combo of running on way too long, throwing in a ?funky? misspelling and then innocently incorporating a term that actually has a nasty sexual undertone. A solid effort.
  5. Karbonn K36+ Jumbo Mini. Another winner. Start with a grating misspelling, move smoothly to a dumb code with a plus sign, then top the whole effort off with a ridiculous oxymoron.

CSN's Curran: Brady to blame for 2nd-half shutout

January 21, 2013, 1:06 am

???
FOXBORO - For the Patriots, it begins and ends with Tom Brady.

Sunday night, in his sixth AFC Championship game, he wasn't good enough.

Over the next few days there will be discussion of what this loss means to Tom Brady's "legacy." It will be noted that Brady is 7-7 in his last 14 playoff games after winning the first 10 in which he played.

It will be additionally pointed out that Brady hasn't won a Super Bowl in eight seasons.

And it's unlikely that anyone will see the irony in the fact those numbers are supposed to be damning. Six conference title appearances in 12 seasons as a starter (we'll include '08 for consistency sake). Two Super Bowl appearances in which he turned the ball over to his defense with a lead late in the fourth quarter that the Patriots happened to lose. A .500 record in the playoffs since that absurd start - 17-7 against the best competition in the sport?

Legacy talk aside, though, this is a game in which Brady shoulders blame for guiding an offense that scored a mere 13 points.

Brady went 29 for 54 for 320 yards with a touchdown and two picks. Neither pick was as consequential as the missed opportunities on key third downs throughout the game.

This wasn't a game the Patriots can reasonably say they handed to Baltimore. The Ravens took it. But the opportunities for New England were there early and they didn't finish them.

After stalling at their 42 on the first drive of the game, the Patriots went into Ravens territory on their next SIX drives.

The Patriots had 12 possessions and only three ended without them making it across midfield. That's incomprehensible for an offense as explosive as New England's to finish the night with 13 points. But that's what happened.

"That was a bad day, bub," Brady said to me when I stopped past his locker after the game. "Bad day at the office."

When he stepped to the podium, Brady was downcast.

"I think we obviously didn't play very well and if you don't play very well against a good team, it's not even very competitive," he said. "It's unfortunate. We just couldn?t make any critical plays when we needed to."

Despite missed opportunities in the first half, Brady did stake the Patriots to a 13-7 lead at the half. New England was just 67-0 under Brady when leading at halftime. And now they aren't.

There were a few critical sputters for the Patriots but one of the most significant came in the third quarter. New England forced a punt, took over at their own 9 and made it all the way to the Ravens 34. A third-and-8 drop by Wes Welker, though, forced New England to punt. And instead of being up 16-7 or even 20-7, the Ravens took the Zoltan Mesko punt and went on a 10-play, 87-yard drive that put them up 14-13 and in the lead for good.

The Patriots mismanaged the clock in the final minute of the first half and should have been able to take a shot at the end zone before settling for a field goal.

One of the most irksome aspects of the game for the Patriots had to be the success they had on first down throughout, followed by an inability to sustain drives.

In the first half, they gained 98 yards on 18 first-down plays. In the second half, until it got to garbage time with 2:05 remaining, they gained 96 on 11 first down plays. 194 yards on 19 first down plays - more than 10 yards per play - and they kept bogging down on second and third-and-short.

"We stayed on track for the most part and avoided some negative plays," said Brady. "But they make it tough on you. They're a good team. They?re a good defense and they kept the pressure on and we just didn?t really stand up to the challenge.

"It always comes to a screeching halt," Brady said when asked about the finality of the loss. "That?s just the way it is. Only two teams advance and those two teams deserve it. We?ve lost before. It takes awhile to get over."

Family protests suspension of child over toy gun talk

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - The family of a Pennsylvania kindergartner suspended from school for talking about a soap bubble toy gun is protesting her punishment and wants her record cleared, an attorney for the family said on Monday.

The unidentified 5-year-old child from Mount Carmel in eastern Pennsylvania was suspended after she talked on January 10 about a Hello Kitty Bubble Gun while waiting for a bus after school, said attorney Robin Ficker.

According to the attorney, the little girl said to a friend: "I'm going to shoot you and I will shoot myself, and we'll all play together."

Her comments were overheard by an adult who reported them to the school, he said.

But the toy shoots only soap bubbles, and the girl did not even have one, he said.

"She had no gun," he said. "She talked about the Hello Kitty Bubble Gun, just talked about it. They searched her back pack, they searched her coat, they searched her, she had no gun."

The family wants school authorities to clear her record, issue an apology and admit they made a mistake, he said.

The incident comes in the wake of the shooting of 20 schoolchildren and six adults at a Connecticut school last month, which has ignited renewed debate about gun violence.

Ficker said he had scheduled a January 30 meeting with school district solicitor Edward Greco. Greco's office confirmed the meeting.

Greco declined to comment on the case.

In a statement issued to local media, the school district said it was continuing to investigate the case and said some information given to media may not be consistent with the facts. It did not elaborate.

Ficker said the child's mother wants to transfer her out of the school but the new school will not accept her because her record includes the allegation of making terroristic threats.

New findings on mortality of individuals with schizophrenia

Jan. 21, 2013 ? A new study from Lund University in Sweden shows that the average life expectancy of men and women with schizophrenia is 15 years and 12 years shorter respectively than for those who do not suffer from the disease. The study has been carried out in collaboration with Stanford University in the US.

The reasons why people with schizophrenia have a shorter life expectancy have previously been unknown, but have been much discussed in recent years. The research report that has now been published shows that individuals with schizophrenia are more likely to die of two major diseases.

The study followed over six million individuals from 2003 to 2009, of whom 8 277 had schizophrenia, by analysing the Swedish population and health registers.

The results show that people with schizophrenia had contact with the health service over twice as often as people without the condition, but they were no more likely to be diagnosed with cardiovascular disease or cancer.

"Yet we saw an opposing pattern of death from these diseases. It is clear that the health service is failing to diagnose cardiovascular disease and cancer in these patients," says Jan Sundquist, general practitioner and professor at the Centre for Primary Health Care Research at Lund University.

Women with schizophrenia were 3.3 times more likely to die of cardiovascular disease and men 2.2 times more likely. Women with schizophrenia were 1.7 times more likely to die of cancer while men were 1.4 times more likely, compared with those without schizophrenia. Only 26.3% of the men with schizophrenia who died of cardiovascular disease had been diagnosed before their deaths, compared with 43.7% of the men who did not have schizophrenia.

"It is unacceptable that such a vulnerable group of people, who also have extensive documented contact with the health service, should die prematurely of conditions such as cardiovascular disease and cancer -- diseases that should be preventable," says Professor Sundquist. "A much greater degree of diagnostic and preventive measures could be put in place for this vulnerable group in our society."

HSBC to pay $249M to end foreclosure reviews

6 hrs.

HSBC Holdings Plc agreed to pay $249 million to end a case-by-case review of past home foreclosures in the United States, bringing the total payout by banks to resolve related issues to $9.3 billion.

London-based HSBC agreed to pay $96 million to eligible borrowers who lost their homes to foreclosure in 2009 and 2010, and provide $153 million in other assistance, including loan modifications and forgiveness.

HSBC said in a statement it was pleased to have reached the agreement and expects to record a pre-tax charge of $96 million in the fourth quarter of 2012 for the cash portion of the settlement. The bank said it expected to cover the loan assistance through existing reserves.

The settlement, with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Federal Reserve Board, is the 13th the agencies have reached this month.

They stem from reviews of individual loan files the regulators ordered in 2011 and 2012, after widespread mistakes were discovered in the way mortgage servicers had processed home seizures.

The reviews, initially expected to determine which borrowers were harmed and to compensate them based on their individual experiences, proved slow and expensive.

Ten banks, including Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citigroup, and JPMorgan Chase, agreed to pay a total of $8.5 billion - some in cash, and the rest in loan assistance - to end the reviews last week.

On Wednesday, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley agreed to a similar $557 million deal.

Around 112,000 borrowers whose homes were in foreclosure with HSBC Bank and other HSBC subsidiaries will receive some cash, regulators said.

Regulators said last week the payouts will be based on whether a borrower falls into one of 11 categories. The categories include whether the person was eligible for protections under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, whether the borrower was not in default, or whether he or she was denied a loan modification.

The Fed and OCC are expected to reach similar agreements with other servicers that had been asked to conduct the reviews, including Ally Financial Inc, EverBank Financial Corp and OneWest Bank FSB.

LaHood: 787s won't fly until 'they are safe'

1 hr.

The U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Ray LaHood, is making it clear the Federal Aviation Administration will not rush to lift the grounding of Boeing 787 Dreamliners.

"These things take time. It's complicated," said LaHood. "We want to make sure we get it right. The flying public expects us to get right, it'll take a little time."

LaHood made his first public comments about the Dreamliner since the FAA issued an airworthiness directive on Wednesday night grounding the 787. Since then 50 Dreamliners owned by 8 airlines around the world have been parked on tarmacs.

"Those planes won't fly until we're one thousand percent sure they are safe to fly," said LaHood.

Related: Are Lithium-ion Batteries Too Dangerous?

Investigators in Japan
On?Friday,?investigators from the FAA, the National Transportation Safety Board and Boeing spent the day??in Japan?inspecting the All Nippon Airways Dreamliner that made an emergency landing after battery warning lights went off in the cockpit and the crew noticed an odd smell. Japan's Transport Ministry says a lithium-ion battery on that 787 failed, but it's still unclear exactly what caused the battery to fail. Investigators are looking at similarities between the Dreamliner battery in Japan and the battery that malfunctioned on a Japan Airlines 787 in Boston on Jan. 7.

Related:?Boeing's Dreamliner Turns Nightmarish

Ever since the JAL Dreamliner caught on fire in Boston, critics have been vocal in questioning the use of lithium-ion batteries in the Boeing 787. Secretary LaHood refused to address that criticism when talking with reporter in Washington. "I'm not an engineer, I don't design planes," said LaHood. "We have smart people who worked on this this as the plane was designed. Then we inspected it, so we want to get it right."

No regrets
The FAA grounded the Dreamliner just five?days after LaHood stood by the head of the FAA and the president of Boeing Commercial Airplanes and proclaimed the 787 to be safe. At the time, LaHood said he would have no problems flying on the Dreamliner. A week later, his message was far different.

When asked if he regretted publicly proclaiming the Dreamliner as safe, LaHood said, "No. Last week it was safe."

What's changed?

"We had another incident with the battery,"said LaHood. "What I want to make sure is that we get this right."

Boeing said Friday that it would continue production of the 787s but "we will not deliver 787s until the FAA approves a means of compliance with their recent Airworthiness Directive concerning batteries and the approved approach has been implemented."

China's growth rebounds to 7.9 percent

(AP) ? China's economy rebounded in the final quarter of 2012 but optimism was tempered by warnings the shaky recovery could be vulnerable to a possible downturn in global trade.

Economic growth rose to 7.9 percent in the three months ending in December as a recovery from China's deepest slowdown since the 2008 global crisis took hold, data showed Friday. That was up from the previous quarter's 7.4 percent rate and raised total growth for the year to 7.8 percent ? China's weakest annual performance since the 1990s.

Forecasters expect China's growth to rise to 8 percent or above in 2013 but say the recovery still could be vulnerable to a downturn in trade or if the communist government fails to keep investment rising.

"We see growth rising above 8 percent in the first half of 2013," said Mark Williams of Capital Economics. "I don't think China is an economy in need of further stimulus at this point."

This week, the World Bank cut its growth forecast for China this year from 8.6 percent to a still-rapid 8.4 percent.

Chinese growth could suffer a setback if its high investment rates slacken or global trade weakens, the bank said. It said a 5 percent decline in investment could knock 1.4 percentage point off this year's economic growth and 6 percent off imports.

The economic slowdown was due largely to government controls imposed to cool a real estate boom and surging inflation fueled by Beijing's massive stimulus in response to the 2008 crisis. The decline worsened as global demand for Chinese exports dropped unexpectedly, raising the risk of job losses and unrest.

The recovery comes as new Communist Party leaders under General Secretary Xi Jinping take power in a once-a-decade political transition that began in October.

Stronger quarterly growth was widely expected after earlier data showed retail sales, factory output and other indicators rising.

In December, retail sales growth accelerated to 15.2 percent compared with a year earlier, up from the previous month's 14.9 percent, the National Bureau of Statistics reported. Factory output growth rose to 10.3 percent over a year earlier from November's 10.1 percent.
